DD Day 2019!

Developmental Disabilities (DD) Day at the State Legislature in Annapolis is 2/13/19.  Registration will close on 2/4/19, OR SOONER, if capacity is met.

Why Go?

Every day, tens of thousands of Marylanders with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) are impacted by the public policy decisions of the Legislature, including the amount of funding available for DD services, the Waiting Lists, civil rights issues like housing and transportation accessibility, the right to be free from unnecessary restraint and seclusion, the availability of free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment, and the protection of our waivers. These are just some of the current issues affecting those with I/DD.

What Happens There?

The event begins at 8 a.m. at the Annapolis Loews Hotel with a Continental Breakfast.

  1. The Developmental Disabilities Coalition holds a briefing on the top legislative and budgetary issues for 2019 that impact the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

  2. Many State Legislators, and often the Governor, will address the group of usually 600-800 people from across the State, regarding the top issues. You will get to see, first hand, the Legislators that are fighting for the people we care about. They are happy to have us there and always indicate that hearing from us directly immensely helps them with the Legislative process.

  3. Briefing packages are handed out with simple talking points.

  4. Then, you’ll go to the House and Senate Office buildings to meet with your elected officials and/or their staff to share information, your experiences, and tell your story, if you so desire. We will team up where possible. We have many new Legislators, especially in Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties. It’s important they understand the concerns of their constituents and the CHI Community.

What’s In It For Me?

This is your opportunity to join hundreds of other Marylanders from the I/DD community to advance the grassroots movement for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. It’s a perfect time to understand the primary DD issues that must be addressed and how your elected MD officials will be supporting our community in 2019. You will also have the chance to influence their decisions if you so desire. It’s a Fun Day and it will warm your heart to see all of the support we have at the State level!!
